Собор Архангела Михаила
Россия, Нижний Новгород

The Archangel Michael Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Nizhny Novgorod and an important spiritual symbol of the city. Located within the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, it is part of the historic ensemble and preserves the memory of ancient Rus.

The first wooden church on this site was built in 1221, the same year Nizhny Novgorod was founded. In the 16th century, it was replaced with a stone cathedral, which has survived to this day. The cathedral’s architecture reflects traditional Russian design, featuring austere lines, a white-stone façade, and soaring domes. The interior is relatively simple but retains an air of antiquity.

This church is also notable as the burial site of Kuzma Minin, a national hero and leader of the Second Militia, which liberated Moscow from Polish invaders in 1612. His tomb inside the cathedral attracts many visitors interested in Russian history.

Today, the Archangel Cathedral remains an active place of worship while also serving as a significant tourist attraction. Its location within the Kremlin makes it a key stop on any historical tour of Nizhny Novgorod, offering insight into the city’s rich past.
